Tour Overview

Mount Meru, standing tall at 4,566 meters (14,979 feet), is Tanzania’s second-highest peak. Often overshadowed by its iconic neighbor, Mount Kilimanjaro, Meru tends to be overlooked by many visitors. However, this majestic mountain offers a breathtaking trekking experience that should not be missed.

A hike up Mount Meru begins with picturesque trails through lush grasslands and dense forests on the lower slopes, providing ample opportunities to connect with nature. As you ascend, the journey transforms into an awe-inspiring ridge walk, culminating in a dramatic and exhilarating approach to the summit. The combination of diverse landscapes and challenging terrain makes Mount Meru a hidden gem for adventurers seeking beauty, solitude, and adventure away from the crowds.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1:  Miriakamba Hut

In the morning, we will collect you from your hotel and transfer to Arusha National Park. Upon arrival at the Momella Gate, we’ll complete the necessary registration formalities before embarking on our journey into the park with your guide and an armed ranger. The forested sections of the park are rich in wildlife, offering stunning scenery filled with towering strangler figs and the chance to spot buffalo grazing peacefully in one of the clearings.

As the day progresses, we’ll make our way through this scenic landscape, reaching a breathtaking viewpoint in the late afternoon. From there, we’ll continue onward to Miriakamba Hut, where you’ll settle in for the evening and enjoy a delicious dinner after a day of exploration amidst Arusha’s lush forests and diverse wildlife. This hut serves as the perfect base for further adventures into the park’s natural wonders.

Day 2: Saddle Hut

From Miriakamba Hut, we begin our journey still within the forest zone, but as we ascend, the landscape gradually transforms. Within a few hours, we arrive at Saddle Hut, nestled in the alpine desert zone, where we pause for lunch. This stark yet beautiful environment offers a striking contrast to the lush forests below.

In the afternoon, you have the option to embark on a rewarding hike to the summit of Little Meru, which provides breathtaking views of the surrounding terrain. As the sun dips lower on the horizon, casting golden light over the landscape, you’ll return to Saddle Hut for dinner, reflecting on the day’s adventures and preparing for the next leg of your journey. The hut serves as an ideal resting point amidst this otherworldly alpine desert setting.

Day 3: Miriakamba

We rise early, and as dawn breaks in the east, our efforts are rewarded with a spectacular sight—the sun rising over Kilimanjaro, which is often clearly visible from this vantage point. Here, the sheer cliffs of Mount Meru’s crater drop dramatically more than 1,000 feet, creating a breathtaking panorama that makes the early start well worth it.

After taking in the stunning views, we make our way back to Saddle Hut for a hearty brunch. Refreshed and energized, we continue descending toward Miriakamba Hut, where we’ll settle in for the evening and enjoy a delicious dinner. This final stop on our journey offers a chance to reflect on the adventure while surrounded by the serene beauty of Arusha National Park.

Day 4: Descend to Momella Gate

The final section of the journey takes approximately 3 hours as we make our way back to the vehicles. Here, we bid a heartfelt farewell to our dedicated crew who have supported us throughout the adventure. Before heading back to Arusha or Moshi, we’ll enjoy a short picnic lunch amidst the park’s scenic beauty and embark on a relaxing game drive to spot some of the local wildlife. This perfect conclusion to your trip will leave you with lasting memories before returning to town for a well-deserved shower and rest.
